Race Report: It’s a sad start to the first big mountain stage of this year’s Vuelta. Team Sky’s masseur Txema González passed away yesterday and the distraught team and staff have all left the race. There’s a minute’s silence to remember a universally popular personality in the cycling world, and PezCyclingNews sends our condolences, too.

Fairy tales are rare in pro cycling, but 25 year old Matthew Busche’s story is about as a close as they come. At the beginning of the 2009 season, he was riding as an amateur in the US, then Kelly Benefits snapped him up, he rode a mere four races for them before Johan Bruyneel signed him for Team Radioshack. Busche's first year in the pro ranks has been a whirlwind tour capped off recently be a stellar finish at the Tour of Denmark.

Roadside St.7: Today there was a big fast sprint into Orihuela, before that the fast men had to get themselves over a bit of a climb. Some got dropped, but they all got together for the gallop into town. Surprisingly I managed to see the hill and the sprint action...here it is:

Race Report: Today was another sprinter’s delight with just one Cat 3 climb along the course, and a flat run in to town. The usual sacrificial break getting caught and today’s sprint was handled by a hard working Lampre team that delivered Ale-Jet just ahead of Mark Cavendish.

Vacansoleil are making the headlines at the moment; there’s the Pro Tour application, Bjorn Leukemans’ win in the 1.1 Druivenkoers and last but not least, the recruitment of Stijn Devolder and a certain Riccardo Ricco. PEZ contacted the team’s commercial manager, Dutchman Frank Kwanten, to get the low down.

Race report: The Vuelta doesn’t do flat very well. Uphill – fine. Downhill – check. Rolling terrain – you got it. But flat? Nope. It was another day where the profile hurt and with a nasty second-category climb towards the finish no-one expected to see the pure sprinters in the shake-up. So we had the win going to a Classics fastman …

Wow, did somebody say transfer season? It's certainly that crazy time of year where riders, managers and suppliers are fighting for the best deals for next year and today we have all the latest from a busy week of negotiations. We also have updates from the Vuelta of course and much more. So, sit back and enjoy - it's Eurotrash time!

Roadside St.5: A sprinter’s day and the best of them are here at the 75th Vuelta a Espańa. Who will take the honours and the champagne? What will I have for lunch? Will there be any Daily Distractions to photograph? All this and more “under-cover” at La Vuelta!

Race Report: After the arduous profiles of the last two days, the sprinters got their chance in Stage 5. Not to say that today was an easy one, but it didn't finish with a final kilometer where the top speed was wrought by the little ring. The big rings got a good workout today as we were treated to a beautiful sprint on the streets of Lorca.

Two times Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, and at only 50 years of age, his time came much too soon. PEZ offers this humble remembrance to the only racer who could carry off a nickname like “The Professor’ with dignity.

Race Report: The longest day yet of the ’10 Vuelta saw the riders tackling 183 km from Málaga to Valdepeńas de Jaén. Philippe Gilbert started the day in red, but a break of four went up the road early.

It’s the final weeks of the summer and a long season of riding and training has gone under our wheels. For some, it’s a holding pattern before the “official” off-season. For others, it’s hanging onto fitness for one last big event. And a third group might be trying to transition from a full road season to cyclocross. What are some things that we can do to keep that morale mojo to the max?

Race Report: You’ve got to hand it to the Vuelta organisers. Day three of racing and they’re already throwing some awkward slopes in front of the sprinters. Today, it was up from the start, and with the first of two nasty classified climbs rearing up from the off, we saw the outgoing leader’s red jersey slipping into the ..., well, red, early on!

Roadside Pez St.1B: A late finish for everyone on Saturday’s team time trial made getting up early on Sunday a bit tricky for some; although the start wasn’t till after 1pm about 30 riders couldn’t make the sign on, but then there was an added reason for that, thanks to the UCI.

Race Report: The host town for stage two of this year’s Vuelta is Alcalá de GuadaĂra and the temperature is already sloping up, up, up. It’s blazing by the mid-day start and the riders have been slow to sign in for their day at the office. The route profile is jagged but the biggest challenge will be remembering to eat enough, as well as drink enough, on a tortuously hot stage.

Roadside Pez St. 1: A leisurely breakfast was followed by lots of writing and looking at photos, this was the lull before the storm! Down at the start/finish area of the team time trial it was like a war scene, helicopters, running people, men with guns and that usual chaos, but it was great fun!
